What we are witnessing in today’s business world is a total inversion of what
many of us were led to expect. The very nature of the “employment contract” is
being re-written as we speak, and for whatever reason the once expected loyalty
on the part of both employers and employees appears to be fading in our
rear-view mirror. Statistics show that a growing number of people are unhappy with their work and are prone to "jump ship." Others are finding
their careers in self-employment, temporary employment, multiple employment
relationships, or employment with a small or micro business that they often own.
Generational differences in values, preferences and work methods make it difficult to muster a single approach that will appeal to all, and "boomers" are starting to exit the labor market taking with them an extraordinary supply of the valuable talent organizations need to be successful.
The nature of the business organization itself has also changed. Small
businesses are flourishing nationwide, and southern California seems to be
leading the charge. The large, tall and formal organization that promised
extended career opportunities is being replaced as the “archetype” of the
business organization by the small, the quick, the nimble, the virtual and often
the temporary organization.
Despite these monumental changes in the business landscape, several things
remain unchanged. First of all, work is still performed by and through
people…people are an essential ingredient! As such, the need for sound
recruitment, selection and retention practices continues, and in some ways is
even more important to business growth and survival than ever before. Secondly,
despite the trend toward the small, the quick and the nimble, economic
efficiency still requires some form of capable organization to ensure effective
coordination and integration. Therefore, the need for effective planning and
management of “the organization” persists, albeit under a set of very different
circumstances.
